Question
7
Will I have to strike?
This is one of the most
common questions about collective bargaining.
While strikes are legal, they are the
exception
to the rule. During the previous decade, IEA averaged about 5
strikes (.05%) per year -- and that's out of 950-plus locals (i.e.
single bargaining units). Academic strikes are rare in Illinois
and the nation.
Most contracts are settled amicably. Faculty and administrators
both share a fundamental commitment to the University's mission, and
they work together throughout the year. If we disagree over key
issues, we'll work out our differences through reasoned discussion,
debate, and compromise.
The power to bargain as equals is the power to work together in a
creative and constructive fashion to find the best ideas and
solutions.
