Question
10
I'm still undecided.
Like many of your colleagues
across campus, you may feel convinced that your employment situation
definitely could be improved. But maybe you have doubts as to
whether collective bargaining is the solution.
Then consider the following points:
Collective bargaining is an increasingly common choice among
nontenure-track (and tenured/tenure-track) faculty in Illinois and
across the nation.
According to a federal Bureau of Labor Statistics report (2001), the
public sector has the highest unionization rate at 43.1%.
Collective bargaining creates a mechanism that guarantees that
nontenure-track faculty are always involved in the decisions that
most affect them.
The Academic Senate has one
nontenure-track Senator to represent the interests of over 40% of
the total faculty.
Collective bargaining ensure mutual support and a credible
collective voice in the decisions concerning our employment
