Brief
History
The
ISU NTT Faculty Association formed during the winter of 2001, when
ten nontenure track faculty met in a restaurant to discuss ways to
improve their pay and working conditions. Fed up with a lack of
progress on promises to improve pay, job security, and working
condiitons, the group decided to form an independent association to
take matters into their own hands. The group met with
representatives of the Illinois Education Association who offered to
help the group exercise their right to engage in collective
bargaining.
On April 2, 2002--the same day that the Illinois Board of Higher
Education met at the Bone Student Center to formally accept a study
of NTT faculty--the ISU NTT Faculty Association-IEA/NEA launched its
effort to organize a union. For the next six months, the group
surveyed NTTs to learn their opinions of what changes were most
needed, contacted NTTs to request their support for the union, and
sent mailings to as many NTTs as they could find.
On October 11, 2002, the NTT-FA filed a petition with the Illinois
Educational Labor Relations Board requesting a union election. ISU
administrators responded by demanding that 268 of the 400 NTT
faculty be prevented from voting, delaying the election. By January
2003, we still wait for bureaucratic processes to grind forward so
we can hold an election.
Our hope is to gain the support of all NTT faculty so that we can
negotiate a contract that promotes the interests of as many NTTs as
possible. If you're an NTT or a member of the community who wants
to express support for our effort, we invite you to become involved
by contacting us today.
