Vote "Yes" for the NTT Faculty Union
by Gretchen E. Knapp, Ph.D.
and Sharon S. MacDonald, IAP
We, the nontenure
track faculty of ISU, now have the long-awaited opportunity to
determine our own fate by voting for a union. We have the legal
right to bargain as a group, and exercising that right gives us
strength. Collective bargaining ensures that all NTTs are treated
fairly and that nobody gets a raw deal.
Only collective bargaining can guarantee that everyone wins when
employees are treated right. NTT working conditions are closely
tied to student learning conditions. Only collective bargaining can
guarantee fair compensation so we can focus our energies on ISU
students rather than spread ourselves thin over several jobs. Only
collective bargaining can guarantee pay equity and raises
appropriate to our training, experience, and discipline. Only
collective bargaining can provide real job security, including
timely notification of reappointment so we can properly prepare
classes. Only collective bargaining can make certain that we know
we are eligible for the benefits we have earned, according to state
statute. Only collective bargaining can guarantee a fair
third-party procedure to resolve workplace grievances.
Isn't it time our collective voices be included in all decisions
that affect us and our working conditions? Check out http//ntt.pabn.org.
If you're still undecided, just remember this: united we bargain,
divided we beg.
